<text>Geoarchaeological Evaluation and Palaeoenvironmental Assessment: OPUS 1, Belvedere</text> <language>en</language>

The assessment was required to support an application for the erection of two commercial buildings. Six window sample boreholes were sunk to recover continuous/windowless cores and Borehole DMWS03 was identified for more detailed sub-sampling and assessment. The assessment has recorded the fine-grained deposits known to exist on the site. By combining the data from the new sequences with those from historical investigations, the lithological evidence demonstrates that there was a cyclical change in the environment represented by fresh and brackish water peats, and intertidal mudflats. This change is driven by relative sea-level change. The results of the radiocarbon dating of the site have been adversely affected by this tidal environment with significant reworking and redeposition of material across the sequence resulting in an inversion of dates. The diatom assessment, whilst likely affected by the same reworking/ redeposition of material as the radiocarbon dating, has been somewhat successful in supporting the findings of the geoarchaeological assessment, with cyclical change in the environment from estuarine mudflats crossed by tidal creeks to the development of a brackish to freshwater environment yet still displaying tidal influences.
