All trenches were scanned using a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) prior to groundworks commencing. Three trenches measuring 25m x 1.8m were excavated within the footprint of the new building to assess the potential for surviving archaeological remains. Trenches were only located within the footprint of the proposed building and not the remainder of the site which will be undergoing soft-landscaping to form a carpark. As no deep intrusive excavation will be taking place in these areas preservation in-situ was suggested as an appropriate mitigation for these areas. During the excavation of the trial trenches, the topsoil and recent overburden were removed down to the natural substrate in successive level spits of a maximum 0.2m thickness, using a tracked machine equipped with a wide toothless ditching bucket. The groundwork was carried out under direct archaeological supervision. All the exposed features were cleaned and excavated by hand. Where appropriate, archaeological remains were recorded using GPS or hand drawn plans (scale 1:20 or 1:50) and/or section/elevation drawings (scale 1:10 or 1:20) which include heights in metres above Ordnance Datum. The trial trenching evaluation was successfully carried out at the Site with the excavation of three 25m x 1.8m trenches.. No archaeological features were identified within any of the trenches. The trenches revealed layers of made ground deposits consistent with landscaping to form the car park which occupied the site at the time of the evaluation. A possible palaeochannel was recorded in Trench 3. During the course of the evaluation no archaeological features were recorded in any of the three trenches.
